SUMMARY:Colour Your Summer with GVPL's 2025 BC Summer Reading Club!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a summer of reading\, creativity\, and connection. The 2025 Summer Reading Club (SRC) runs from Friday\, June 20 to Saturday\, September 6\, and is open to children aged 14 and under. \n \nPick up your SRC reading record starting Friday\, June 20 at any GVPL branch. \n\nHow It Works\n \n• Visit any GVPL branch to pick up your free SRC package\, which includes your reading record and everything you need to get started. \n• Read—or be read to—for 20 minutes or more each day. You can read in any format\, in any language\, and in any location.\n \n• Track your progress on your reading record. One number equals one day of reading.\n \n• Return to the library each week to collect your sticker and prize.\n \n• Complete seven weeks of reading to earn a medal and celebrate your achievement. \n \n\nPrograms and Activities\n\nOur goal this summer is to encourage kids and families to connect with their local branch and enjoy all the BC Summer Reading Club has to offer. SUMMARY:PiSE - Summer Inclusion Support Service
DESCRIPTION:PISE is happy to provide a variety of options for participants who require inclusion support. If your child requires inclusion support please read the instructions below on how to register and review our frequently asked questions. If you still have questions regarding our Inclusion Support Service email inclusion@pise.ca. \nRegistration for inclusion opens March 12 at 7:00am online and 7:30am in person/phone \nRegistering your Child for Inclusion Support: \nAt PISE we do our best to provide inclusion support to as many participants as possible\, while still providing the opportunity for participants to have the best camp experience possible! Participants are eligible for up to TWO weeks of Inclusion Support services each summer\, on a first come\, first serve basis. Our staff are unable to provide personal care such as toileting or feeding. \nSTEP 1: Review our camp offerings\, and decide on your desired dates for your child to attend a PISE camp. \nSTEP 2: Register your child in an Inclusion Support camp week. Please note you do not have to register your child in the actual camp\, registration in an Inclusion Support camp will secure your childs spot in your desired camp. Our Inclusion Coordinator will reach out to you directly confirming your Inclusion Support\, and will assist you with registration and payment in your desired camp. \nIf your desired week is full\, add yourself to the waitlist or see if a different week is still available. \nSTEP 3: Once you have received confirmation\, you will be requested to complete and submit our Intake Form. This must be submitted within 14 days of registration. SUMMARY:Substance Use Recovery: A Personal Account from the Front Lines
DESCRIPTION:Brian Dean Williams brings years of frontline experience supporting individuals with mental health and substance use challenges. Like many in this field\, his early career took a personal toll—leading him to face his own struggles with substance use as a way of coping with stress and moral injury. \n\n\n\n\nIn this session\, Brian offers a heartfelt and honest account of that journey: the challenges he faced\, how his work intersected with his personal struggles\, and the path he took toward healing. His story is one of resilience\, insight\, and hope—for himself and for other frontline workers navigating similar experiences. \n\n\n\n\nIn the second half of the session\, Brian will share practical strategies that have supported not only his own recovery but also the well-being of dozens of frontline workers he’s guided through therapy\, clinical supervision\, workshops\, and retreats. He’ll introduce a compassionate framework to understand the full spectrum of substance use and offer tools to respond skillfully—whether supporting ourselves or others. \n \n\n\n\n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nBy the end of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\n\nRecognize the unique risks that frontline service workers face in developing problematic substance use\nIdentify early warning signs that may indicate personal struggles with substance use\nDevelop a deeper understanding of the spectrum of substance use and learn how to respond skillfully and compassionately—both to themselves and others\nBecome familiar with practical resources and evidence-informed models for addressing problematic substance use\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter \n\n\n\n\nBrian Dean Williams is a registered clinical counsellor and approved clinical supervisor. Brian has worked on the frontlines for 28 years with folks struggling with mental health\, substance use\, housing\, and marginalization. He has worked in the downtown eastside in Vancouver\, and in small First Nations (Indigenous) communities. Brian’s main modalities are narrative therapy and Buddhist psychology\, although he also draws from other collaborative forms of counselling and community work. He has taught at Correctional Services of Canada\, Raincity Housing\, Vancouver Coastal Health\, the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation\, and many more. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes our loved ones communicate their needs in ways that are hard to understand — through what we often call “reactive behaviors” or behaviors that challenge us. These might stem from things like sensory overload\, limited language\, anxiety\, or other unmet needs. \nAs caregivers\, it can feel overwhelming — but you’re not alone. Join our bi-weekly Family Hangout where caregivers come together to share experiences\, support one another\, and explore tools and strategies that others have found helpful. These conversations are rooted in the belief that all behaviour has meaning and that\, as trusted adults\, we can model self-regulation\, adapt our environments\, and work toward meeting the needs behind the behaviour. \nThis call now brings together families from two former groups — Complex Behaviours and Non-Speaking Autism. We welcome all who are navigating this journey and want to learn and connect in a supportive\, non-judgmental space.
